H.E. Dr. AbdulLatif Al Zayani is the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, a position he holds since 2011.
Dr. Al Zayani has held several positions within the Bahrain Defense Force, last of which was assistant chief of staff for operations until 2004 when he was appointed Chief of Public Security as a Major General at the Ministry of Interior. Next, he was appointed adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the rank of Minister in 2010.
Dr. Al Zayani worked as a lecturer at the Arabian Gulf University and professor of mathematics and statistics at the University of Maryland in Bahrain. He was also professor of quantitative methods at the University of Bahrain.
He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom in 1973. He is also a graduate of the aeronautical engineering program in Perth, Scotland in 1978. He received a master’s degree in logistics management from the Air Force Institute of Technology in Dayton, Ohio in the US in 1980, and a PhD in operations research from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California in 1986. In 1988, he graduated from the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
