In her address, 'The Role of Women in Rebuilding Nations’, Nobel Peace Prize co-laureate, Leymah Gbowee, highlighted how women and men in all nations need to work side by side to build peaceful and prosperous nations. Gbowee, a Liberian peace activist responsible for leading a women’s non-violent peace movement, discussed how, in many parts of the world, everyday women are overlooked in different ways. Moreover, young girls in the classroom are often fed the old stereotyped image of women staying at home, or working in traditionally female-dominated roles, such as a nurse or a teacher. These everyday social norms still seen in parts of the world are hugely exacerbated during times of conflict and war. Pointing to her own first-hand experience in the Liberian Civil War, Gbowee concluded that women need more opportunities to “get a seat at the table”, when it comes to shaping peace talks and better gender-neutral legislation within their countries.
