In one of the World Government Summit main sessions, three renowned telecom industry experts debated the rapid technological advances that re-shaped a sector once dominated by government monopolies. Today, this sector became at the forefront of innovation and progress. H.E. Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, Director General of the UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), was joined on stage by Houlin Zhao, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and Osman Sultan, chief executive of du, the UAE’s second telecom operator when it comes to revenue. H.E. Mansoori urged telecom operators to be smarter in using the massive amounts of data they produce, and process this data in order to create additional value. He also predicted data-enabled technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) would change business models across multiple sectors such as education and health.
